Google Summer of Code 2008 is on! Over the past three years, the program has brought together over 1500 students and 2000 mentors from 90 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. We look forward to welcoming more new contributors and projects this year. Student Application Deadline Extended
This year, we experimented with the program timeline providing one week for students to discuss project ideas with their mentors and then a single week to submit applications. We have heard feedback from the community that it would be beneficial to provide more time for students to submit their applications, so we've done just that. The new deadline for student applications is Monday, April 7, 2008. Please see the revised program timeline for full details on the updated Google Summer of Code 2008 schedule.
All participating mentoring organizations for 2008 have provided additional information for their would-be students, including a list of sample project ideas. Take a look and see which ones most closely match your skills and interests, then start talking to your would-be mentors! Remember, the more a mentoring organization knows about you, and you about their code base and community, the more likely it is that your application will be attractive to your potential mentors.
Student Applications
We are now accepting student applications for 2008. Please check out the application specific documentation for details on how to submit your application (and the applicable deadlines). Mentor Sign Ups
Individuals interested in participating in the program as mentors should submit their request online to their organization's administrator. See the Mentor's Guide to the Google Summer of Code Web Application for more details.
Getting Involved
Take a look at the program FAQs and Terms of Service, then visit the 2005, 2006 and 2007 program pages for inspiration. If you find you have a great idea to improve one of the projects you see listed, talk to your potential mentors using the contact information on their Ideas pages or their project website.
We'll also be hanging out in #gsoc on Freenode and on the program discussion list. We'd love to see you there. Izvor: http://code.google.com/soc/2008/
