Historical sources such as photos, documentaries, propaganda materials and recorded personal memories (audio files) on the one side and a biographic access on the other side will be means to be used in a dialogue and a co-operation between historians and artists (in form of a creative cooperation tandem for each country) on possible forms of a(n) (artistic) way of dealing with history or the interpretation of recollection in the participants' countries of origin. By collective analysis of all the different country- or group-specific concepts of oneself, of the others and of the enemy (in terms of the experiences of war and it's consequences as well as in terms of a peaceful upheaval) a basis of comparison is to be established. In the former Yugoslavia dealing with the past and the time of war is characterized by strong nationalistic tensions and ethnic fragmentations which make the dialogue between minorities and majorities very difficult or even impossible and thus endanger a peaceful co-existence and peace consolidation. Nevertheless the necessity of coming to terms with the past remains controversial in the succession states of the former Yugoslavia. On the one hand it is feared that in such young post-conflict-states the work of dealing with the past is more likely to increase the tensions than to consolidate peace. On the other hand it is argued, that in the long term only a thoroughly democratization leads to a stabilization of the social and political situation. The societies of the succession states of former Yugoslavia are shaped by individual and collective traumata as by ethnic tensions between majorities and minorities. In the population there is a strong tendency, to look at the history of the own country from a victims' point of view. Especially the younger generation tends towards a one-dimensional perspective. In Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia and the Kosova it lacks scientific and political elites as protagonists of dealing with history and taking action in a multi-perspective way. Instead it is national and ethnic interests which dominate the discourses. Procedere The project is divided in five phases: 1 st project phase: An international conference and a first workshop will be held in Berlin in July 2nd- 4th, 2008. It focuses on the transfer of knowledge, on dialogue and on the exchange of the different experiences in dealing with the past, with collective memory and identity formation of Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, the Kosovo and Serbia. The interdisciplinary conference is aimed to identify and to reflect the different social discourses. It addresses experts, artists and includes the co-operation partners and the selected participants. In the first workshop the cooperation tandems focus on the development and discussion on possible forms of a(n) (artistic) way of dealing with history or the interpretation of recollection in the participants' countries of origin. 2 n d phase: In the following phase of implementation and cooperation the participants/tandems sift the existing material (photos, films, audio files) resp. create new Material through interviews and start to work with. Ideally historians and artists of the particular countries will operate as tandems to develop a project for the exhibit based on the historical and biographic material. During the first workshop a first draft of the subproject plan of the single country tandems will be developed. 3 rd phase: After the first workshop in July 2008 the tandems will work intensely on their themes and projects (from July to the end of October). The second workshop at the beginning of November in Belgrade serves as a platform for presenting and discussing the specific concepts, artistic works and historical elaborations for the common future exhibition and the internet platform. 4 th phase: Reworking of the concepts for the artistic realization; development of the exhibition (opening in Belgrade/Sarajevo and Berlin/Warsaw in May/June 2009) 5 th phase: Development of the Information and Learning portal in English containing material on the subject, a documentary on the project subject and the artistic work of the participants (opening April/May 2009)
